To DH or not DH?

Postby czar » Mon May 31, 2010 11:46 pm

Since our league's inception, we have been a no-DH league. When we founded the BLA, we smugly boasted that we "played real baseball," blah, blah, blah, and that our pitchers were manly and, therefore, they hit.
More than 13 seasons have passed, and I have to confess that I am no longer impressed with seeing our BLA pitchers come to the plate. They hit like, well, pitchers. When they do put the ball in play with a man on first, it's frequently a ground ball that results in a double play. An actual base hit (or heaven forbid, a homer) by a pitcher is viewed as a fluke -- with a resulting complaint in the BLA Forum.
I have come to regard pitcher at-bats as not being meaningful, other than their value as mostly automatic outs.
I am well aware of the strategic implications of the pitcher coming to the plate. Managers often have to make decisions on pitching changes when the pitcher is in the on-deck circle, not on the mound. I like that strategy part of it, and I think most of you do, too.
The problem is, you know exactly what your risk is when you make those decisions to pinch-hit for your pitcher. You substitute accordingly.
The same, however, cannot be said of the Diamond Mind computer manager. And therein lies our problem.
Designing a computer baseball manager seems a daunting task. DMB's founder, Tom Tippett, did a masterful job when he created the AI that goes into the Diamond Mind manager.
But quirks exist.
To me, an increasingly annoying one is the propensity on the part of the computer manager (the CM) to perform a double-switch when changing pitchers. The CM's greatest fear appears to be letting a pitcher, any pitcher, come to the plate. Therefore, if the pitcher is within two innings of going to the bat rack, the Diamond Mind computer manager replaces both your pitcher and (usually) one of your starting players when he makes the pitching change.
I, frankly, don't know how to change the settings in DMB to keep this from happening so often. I have come to loathe the double-switch. Each period, when I check my home game boxscores that my opponents have posted, I can count on seeing two or three ill-timed double-switches.
At the risk of burying my lede, here's what this dispatch is all about:
Given the lack of meaningful value of BLA pitchers' at-bats and given the unrealistic frequency with which the Diamond Mind CM executes the double-switch, I think we need to revisit our policy of banning the designated hitter.
I have posted a new topic in the "Polls" area of the forum for you to vote.
I have no dog in this hunt. My mind still isn't made up. But this is one area where I'd like for all 24 managers to voice their opinions -- should the BLA change to a DH league for 2011, or not?
Our BLA pitchers will suffer, admittedly. The difference may be slightly more acute than the real-life statistical difference between the American and National leagues. But all 24 teams will be in the same boat.
Let's hear from everyone. Please respond to this message and/or vote in the poll.
